Thanks to all the wonderful folks in Sheyenne who contributed so much of their time, talent, energy, and effort to making this Landmark 125th Celebration a weekend to remember! Now that the event is over, we should all have some wonderful memories and a great foundation on which to build for more community activities.
There was something for everyone this weekend–marvelous food (barbeque, pancake brunch, turkey dinner, event concessions, and community potluck), an amazing fireworks show (thanks, David Wahlstrom!), music to cut a rug or shake a leg to (October Road & Rob Hendrickson), meaningful community worship, lots of conversation and memories at the reunion, fun at the Bull-o-rama and bingo, and tons of excitement at the derby (congrats, Elvis!). Thanks to Stan and Marilynn Kruger for hosting open house at the Sheyenne Depot on their farm. It was a treat to see the depot looking so spiffy and to see the wonderful history displays Stan and Marilynn prepared.
If you didn’t get to see the Children’s Theatre production of “This is a Test,” directed by Charlotte Franks-Erickson and starring some talented local youth, you really missed something. I continue to be amazed at the level and abundance of creativity and talent in this town. Way to go, Collin, Joanna, Maddie, Loren, Coltin, Brady, David, Sandra, Katherine, Shayla, Shantel, and Leah! I can’t wait to see your next production.
There are so many people who deserve thanks, but I’m afraid I’ll leave someone out, so just know that I appreciate this town and the people of Sheyenne so much! This truly is a great place to live, and the dedication and community spirit exhibited here are remarkable. I’m looking forward to seeing great strides in the next 25 years.

Yes, it’s been cold. Yes, it’s been long, and yes, it’s been snowy and icy, but winter hasn’t dampened the spirits of the Sheyenne Community!
Good things continue to happen as community members and our new community organization G.R.I.T. work on various projects. Developing the school property is still at the forefront of our efforts (more about that to come later), but here’s a brief summary of other things brewing:
1) We will continue with our Sheyenne Farmers’ Market and are joining the North Dakota Farmers Market and Growers Association.
2) Our local ELCA Lutheran Parish, the Sheyenne-Oberon Area Ministry, has started a fund to “bridge the gap” between available resources and need, particularly in the area of providing good, fresh food. If you know of someone who might benefit from The Bridge Fund, please contact Pastor Sharron Lucas at 996-3363.
3) Our monthly community potluck meals and G.R.I.T. meetings continue to be well-attended and a lot of fun. If you’re not joining us, plan on stopping in on Monday, February 23rd. The meal gets underway at 5:30 pm (bring a dish to share if you like), and a brief meeting and information sharing session follows.
4) Looks like we may have a community garden this year! Stay tuned for more details.
5) Need transportation to New Rockford? Need someone to pick up medicine or groceries? Call Pastor Sharron or Mike and Jan Loe.
6) Plans are underway for the 2009 Fourth of July Celebration. Look for big things and lots of variety this year!
7) The Sheyenne Star will soon be revived as a quarterly newspaper to keep everyone informed about people and events in Sheyenne. We also have some wonderful regular columnists lined up for your reading pleasure.
Stay in touch, keep warm, and stop in at the Spicy Roadkill Cafe on Tuesdays and Thursdays (11:00 until 1:00) for a homemade meal and some wonderful conversation at a great price. The SRC is located in Wild Things Taxidermy on Hwy. 281.

The Excitement is mounting as we are getting closer to November 4th. An important date and surely a historic one to boot. It all started when many people said they wanted to be president. through many tough and difficult caucuses and primaries. The Republicans were the first to decide thier party’s nomination, who was John McCain(R). Then it was left up to one of the most painful Democratic pick in the history of GOPs. The final led to a Barack Obama(D) win. With these two were picked, they then toured to country trying to wrap up some votes. Then they had to choose thier running mate. The Democratic VP is Joe Biden(D), and the Republican VP is Sarah Palin(R). There soon after the national conventions were held. Now the Presidential hopefuls are out runing around to debates, interviews, etc. And Now it is up to you. Here is a mini poll for the area just to see who likes who in the area.

The Farmers Market is a great hit around the area. We have had total strangers come in to the market. This is an excitable new way of commerce in the area. Thanks to those of you who have contributed, both as a consumer and producer. We can make things happen here. And we’ve found another way to show it!

Sheyenne, ND is more than a town, it is a community!
As I sit here thinking about this. I realize that it takes a lot for a town to truly be a community. It runs much deeper than a place to live. My grandmother explained to me when I was younger that it takes more to make a house a home. This is how I look at the community of Sheyenne, ND. I had an opportunity to move to this community in 1999, moved away in 2006 for Arizona and returned in 2007. In the year away from Sheyenne, ND, I realized many things. It wasn’t just returning home to my immediate family, but something much deeper. The people here are far from anything that I had experienced in Arizona. It doesn’t matter where, who or what you are, there is always a friendly hello, a warm hand shake or hug that says you matter. Many times I have seen these acts of kindness displayed by the Sheyenne Community. The people are always there to help one another through personnal deeds or as a community. It maybe something as little as being there to talk and listen/a hand on the shoulder, providing someone with transportation/a meal or as big as putting on a benefit/community development. It is not just one person, but instead the community that comes together.
SHEYENNE, ND is truly more than a town, IT IS A COMMUNITY.
